Over the winter break, Karen Herrera PO ’15 and Kimberley Africa PO ’15 led a series of seven workshops at RiT Gallery in La Puente.
The Voices project, conceived, organized, and realized by Karen and Kim aimed to, “create an alternative art making space for at risk low-income youth,” in downtown La Puente, in partnership with the gallery, with the aim of developing art as a medium of empowerment for youth. Workshops on oil painting and printmaking were accompanied by lectures and discussions on art and social justice, particularly the work of artists and art collectives in the LA area.
The project culminates in an exhibition of participants’ work at RiT Gallery opening on January 17th.
The Voices project was supported by an Arts Inspiration grant from the Elemental Arts Initiative.
