The first in a series of events for the social practice project “you are [not] alone” by Andrew Hong and Juliette Walker.

The piece explores the range of thoughts of the imminent future conceived by seniors in college on the brink of leaving the bubble of undergraduate life.

The project is supported by an Arts Inspiration grant from Elemental Arts.

Online application for Elemental Arts’ 2013 Summer Experience in the Arts (SEA) Awards is now open. Deadline for applications is February 15, 2013.

Please apply online through your affiliated college’s Career Services/Career Development Office portal. Depending on the format of your Careers portal the application will be listed under the tab labeled “Opportunities,” or “Jobs/Internships/On Campus Recruiting,” or a similar label.

Six (6) summer stipends to support student research in the arts will be awarded. Elemental Arts aims to support students intending to pursue fulltime internships, arts apprenticeships, collaborative research with a member of the arts faculty, or their own research agenda with frequent and substantive arts faculty interaction. Projects applying a cross-disciplinary perspective and a collaborative approach across the arts, sciences, humanities, and social sciences are encouraged.

Students are eligible to apply if they satisfy one of the following requirements:

  • Currently enrolled Pomona College students;
  • Students from Scripps, Harvey Mudd, Claremont McKenna, and Pitzer College enrolled in an arts course with a Pomona College professor;
  • Students enrolled for independent study in the arts at Pomona College;
  • Students participating in a performance ensemble based at Pomona College.

The deadline for ArtsInspiration grants for student-initiated projects has been posted. The deadline for Fall 2012 applications is Monday, October 29.

ArtsInspiration grants are small grants up to $300 for interdisciplinary projects with an arts component. The grant may be considered for completion of senior thesis projects.

Busy week for Elemental Arts!

On Thursday, September 27th, Pomona College Museum’s Art After Hours will present five Elemental Arts Summer Research Projects.

Meanwhile, on the same night, at Rose Hills Theatre the Claremont Colleges Environmental Analysis Program will screen The Dark Side of Chocolate in collaboration with Pomona College Dining Services. Screening is sponsored by the Elemental Arts Initiative.

Pomona College Museum is looking for an intern during Summer 2012 to help curate an exhibition for Fall 2012. Details below.

Museum exhibition SURP

A curatorial research project leading to an exhibition in Fall 2012 in the Pomona College Museum of Art.

The subject of the exhibition is determined and will complement the Mellon Elemental Arts project 2012/13 theme, “EARTH.” Working with the director of the museum, the student will develop an exhibition drawn from the museum holdings in the aerial photography of Marilyn Bridges.

The student will research and select work, develop installation plan, and write an informative exhibition brochure. Open to all continuing students; it will be helpful to have a background in art history, anthropology, and/or environmental analysis.

The award is $5,000 with additional funds available for research expenses.
